॥ Chapter 10, Shloka 20 ॥

अहमात्मा गुडाकेश सर्वभूताशयस्थित: |
अहमादिश्च मध्यं च भूतानामन्त एव च || १०.२० ||

Summary Translation:

I am the Self, O Gudakesha, seated in the hearts of all creatures. I am the beginning, the middle and the end of all beings.

Detailed Analysis:

Krishna identifies the 'Theoretic Core of the Vibhuti Yoga.' He says, 'aham ātmā guḍākeśha sarva-bhūtāśhaya-sthitaḥ'—I am (aham) the Self (ātmā), O conqueror of sleep (guḍākeśha), seated in the hearts/inner consciousness (āśhaya) of all (sarva) beings (bhūta). 'aham ādiśh cha madhyaṁ cha bhūtānām anta eva cha'—I am (aham) the beginning (ādiḥ), the middle (madhyam), and also the end (antaḥ eva) of all beings (bhūtānām). This analysis focuses on the 'Theoretic Definition of the Indwelling Divinity.' Krishna explains that before He lists 'External' opulences, He must state the 'Internal' opulence: that He is the very life-force of everything. In the 'Theoretic Framework of Temporal Totality,' the Divine is not just a participant in time but the 'Structure' of time—the Alpha, the Omega, and everything in between. This detailed analysis reveals that Krishna defines 'Ātmā' as the underlying 'I' that is common to all. This shloka provides a ' Framework for Radical Equality.' It teaches that since the same 'Self' is seated in the 'Āśhaya' (heart) of all, there is no fundamental difference between beings. Krishna is telling Arjuna that 'Before you look for Me in the stars, look for Me in yourself; for I am the consciousness that allows you to look.' This is the ' Goal of the Internal Seeker,' where 'The Self' is 'Universal'.

The detailed analysis of 'Guḍākeśha' (Conqueror of sleep/darkness) is the 'Theoretic Description of the Awakened Pupil.' In our practical lives, we are 'Asleep' to our own true identity. Krishna is stating that Arjuna is ready to hear this because he has 'Conquered' the sleep of ignorance. Krishna is defining 'The Self' as the 'Temporal Continuity.' This shloka provides a 'Framework for the Totality of Existence.' It teaches that 'Ādi-Madhya-Anta' (Beginning-Middle-End) is a single Divine movement. Krishna is defining 'Sarva-bhūtāśhaya-sthitaḥ' as the intimacy of God—closer than our own breath. This verse is the ' Proof that the Divine is the constant factor in a changing world.' By using the word 'Eva' (Certainly/Only), He emphasizes His exclusivity as the source and destination. This shloka is the 'Universal Manual for Self-Inquiry,' forcing us to realize that 'To find God, we must penetrate the I until we hit the Universal I'. This is the ' Goal of the Awakened Seeker,' where 'The Existence' is 'Saturated'.
