रजस्तमश्चाभिभूय सत्त्वं भवति भारत।
रजः सत्त्वं तमश्चैव तमः सत्त्वं रजस्तथा।। १४.१० ।।
Summary Translation:
Sometimes the mode of goodness becomes prominent, defeating the modes of passion and ignorance, O son of Bharata. Sometimes the mode of passion defeats goodness and ignorance, and at other times ignorance defeats goodness and passion. In this way there is always competition for supremacy.
In this shloka, Lord Krishna explains the Competition between the three Gunas for Dominance over the human personality. He says that sometimes Sattva prevails by Overpowering (abhibhuya) Rajas and Tamas. Sometimes Rajas prevails over Sattva and Tamas, and sometimes Tamas prevails over Sattva and Rajas. This analysis presents the Fluidity of human nature. It tells us that our Character is not a Constant but a Battlefield where the ratio of the modes is constantly shifting. In a religious sense, this shloka provides the Explanation for Inconsistency. Why is a person kind one day (Sattva), angry the next (Rajas), and lazy the day after (Tamas)? It is because of the Tidal Wave of the Gunas. The detailed interpretation highlights that Growth is the Art of Encouraging Sattva to stay on the Throne. Krishna addresses Arjuna as Bharata, Challenging him to Master this competition. This analysis shows that Bondage is not a Static condition but a Dynamic process. The religious significance is that the Goal is not just to have Sattva, but to reach a state where the Gunas no longer Fight because the soul is Beyond them. This shloka provides the Basis for Sadhana (spiritual practice). We perform Acts like prayer, meditation, and service to Tip the Scales in favor of Sattva. It confirms that Victory over our lower nature is a Possibility through Awareness of this internal competition. Thus, the detailed analysis of this verse points to the Necessity of Self-observation to see which Guna is currently Ruling. It prepares the student to understand the Indicators of each mode's dominance, after seeing the Mechanism of their struggle for power.
