सत्त्वं रजस्तम इति गुणाः प्रकृतिसम्भवाः।
निबध्नन्ति महाबाहो देहे देहिनमव्ययम्।। १४.५ ।।
Summary Translation:
Material nature consists of three modes—goodness, passion and ignorance. When the eternal living entity comes in contact with nature, O mighty-armed Arjuna, he becomes conditioned by these modes.
In this pivotal verse, Lord Krishna introduces the Three-Fold Mechanics of material nature. He identifies the Gunas as Sattva (goodness), Rajas (passion), and Tamas (ignorance). He explains that these qualities are prakriti-sambhavah—born of the material nature. The most critical part of this Revelation is the verb nibadhnanti (they bind). Krishna explains that these three modes bind the dehinam (the soul), which is avyayam (imperishable), within the dehe (the material body). This analysis helps a devotee to Externalize their impulses. Instead of saying I am angry or I am lazy, one says This is the mode of Rajas or This is the mode of Tamas. This Distance is the first step toward Liberation. The detailed interpretation emphasizes that Sattva, Rajas, and Tamas are not external objects but Qualities of the mind and ego. They create a Filter through which we perceive the world. This shloka provides the Basis for Self-Diagnosis. By understanding that these modes Bind us, we are encouraged to Analyze which mode is dominant in our lives. This verse is the Starting Point for the rest of the chapter, where the Lord will explain the Characteristics of each mode. It confirms that Bondage is a Reality of the material world, even for an Imperishable soul.
