यातयामं गतरसं पूति पर्युषितं च यत्।
उच्छिष्टमपि चामेध्यं भोजनं तामसप्रियम्।। १७.१० ।।
Summary Translation:
Food prepared more than three hours before being eaten, food that is tasteless, decomposed and putrid, and food consisting of remnants and untouchable things is dear to those in the mode of darkness.
In this verse, Lord Krishna defines the Characteristics of food in the Mode of ignorance (Tamas). He identifies such Foods as Yata-yamam (prepared long ago), Gata-rasam (tasteless), Puti (putrid), Paryushitam (decomposed), Ucchishtam (remnants/leftovers), and Amedhyam (impure). This Analysis is Shocking because it reveals that Darkness is attracted to Decay. For a Hindu, Tamasic food is Destructive to the Soul, as it increases Sleep, laziness, and Delusion. Krishna is Identifying that the Preference for Stale or Rotten food is a Sign of a soul Lost in Maya. The analysis reveals that Tamas in eating leads to the Degradation of human Intelligence. Krishna’s Diagnosis proves that Ignorance is Fueled by Impurity. The Significance of this shloka is that it defines the Boundary of what is Inedible for a spiritual seeker. By Avoiding these foods, the soul Escapes the Trap of Inertia. Krishna’s Insight proves that Tamas creates a Veil that Blinds the person to their own Potential. The Lesson here is that Purity is Mandatory for any Advancement. This verse acts as a Warning against the Poison of Laziness in food preparation. It reinforces the Truth that Life is Diminished by the intake of Death. Ultimately, Salvation is Impossible for those who Enjoy the Putrid. This shloka is a Call to Awakening from Slumber.
