Summary Translation:
Those who undergo severe austerities and penances not recommended in the scriptures, performing them out of pride and egoism, who are impelled by lust and attachment, who are foolish and who torture the material elements of the body as well as the Supreme Soul dwelling within, are to be known as demons.
In these verses, Lord Krishna provides a Condemnation of Penance that is performed outside the Mandate of the shastras. He describes such people as Ashastra-vihitam, meaning they engage in Austerities that have no Basis. Driven by Dambha (pride) and Ahankara (ego), their Motivation is purely Defiant. Krishna is Identifying that Penance without Wisdom is a form of Violence. The analysis reveals that these individuals are Kamaraga-balanvitah—impelled by the force of lust and attachment. This Force leads them to Karshayantah (torture) the Elements of the body. For a Hindu, the body is a Temple, and to cause it unnecessary Suffering is a Sin. Krishna Highlights that they not only torture their own bodies but also Mam-chaiva-antah-sharirastham—torture the Lord who dwells within as the Supersoul. This Blasphemy is the Mark of the Asura-nishchayan (demonic resolve). The Significance of this shloka is that it distinguishes between Self-discipline and Masochism. True Tapasya is meant to purify the Heart, not to inflate the Ego. Krishna’s Diagnosis proves that Extreme actions performed for Show are Destructive. The Lesson here is that Sincerity must be Guided by scriptural Knowledge. Without this, Austerity becomes a Trap for the soul. Krishna’s Warning is clear: those who Reject the Harmony of the Vedas are Sinking into deeper Darkness. Ultimately, Salvation is Impossible through Whims. This verse reinforces the Truth that the Path to God is one of Balance and Non-violence toward oneself and the Divine within.
