Chapter 18, Shloka 14

अधिष्ठानं तथा कर्ता करणं च पृथग्विधम् ।
विविधाश्च पृथक्चेष्टा दैवं चैवात्र पञ्चमम् ॥ १८.१४ ॥

Summary Translation:

The place of action [the body], the performer, the various senses, the many different kinds of endeavor, and ultimately the Supersoul—these are the five factors of action.

Detailed Analysis:

In this verse, Lord Krishna provides the Identification of the Five Factors of action mentioned in the previous shloka. These are: 1) Adhishthanam (the seat of action/the body), 2) Karta (the doer/the ego), 3) Karanam (the various instruments/the senses), 4) Cheshta (the various endeavors/effort), and 5) Daivam (the Divine/Providence/Supersoul). This Analysis is Revolutionary because it places Human Effort as only one-fifth of the Equation. For a Hindu, this Shloka is a Antidote to Stress and Egoism. Krishna is Identifying that the Body and the Senses are Tools, not the Self. The analysis reveals that Endeavor is Necessary but not Sufficient for Success. The inclusion of Daivam as the Fifth factor is the Key to Surrender. Krishna’s Diagnosis proves that Anxiety arises when we Forget the Role of the Divine. The Significance of this shloka is that it provides a Map of Reality. Krishna’s Insight proves that Success is a Blessing, and Failure is a Lesson. The Lesson here is that Balance is Achieved by Balancing our Effort with Trust in Daivam. This verse acts as a Guide for Sincerity, confirming that Peace is the Result of Wisdom. Ultimately, Salvation is Attained by those who Align their Karta (ego) with the Daivam. This shloka is a Celebration of Complexity. By Outlining these Factors, Krishna Empowers the Devotee to act with Focus and Detachment. It reinforces the Truth that the Divine is the Ultimate arbiter of all Karma. Thus, Understanding of these factors becomes a Weapon against Pride.
