श्रद्धावाननसूयश्च शृणुयादपि यो नर: ।
सोऽपि मुक्त: शुभाँल्लोकान्प्राप्नुयात्पुण्यकर्मणाम् ॥ १८.७१ ॥
Summary Translation:
And even the man who listens with faith and without envy shall become free from sinful reactions and attain to the auspicious planets where the pious dwell.
In this verse, Lord Krishna extends the benefits of the Gita even to those who may not be able to study or teach it deeply, but simply listen to it. He specifies two essential qualities for such a listener: shraddhavan (full of faith) and anasuyash-cha (free from envy). If a person listens to this sacred dialogue with these qualities, Krishna promises that sah-api muktah—that person also becomes liberated from the reactions of sins and prappnuyat-shubhan-lokan—attains the auspicious realms or planets of the pious (punya-karmanam). This verse highlights the power of Shravanam (hearing) in Hindu spirituality. The analysis reveals that hearing the truth is a transformative act in itself. Krishna is identifying that faith is the key that opens the heart to divine vibrations. Even if one does not fully grasp the philosophical intricacies of the Gita, the mere act of hearing it with a pure heart purifies the subconscious mind. This verse serves as a source of great encouragement for the common seeker; it proves that the path of the Gita is inclusive and accessible to all. The term Anasuya (non-envious) is repeatedly emphasized because envy or fault-finding creates a mental barrier that prevents the wisdom from entering. Krishna's diagnosis proves that our environment and what we listen to shape our destiny. By listening to the Gita, we replace material noise with spiritual sound, which leads to Shubhan Lokan—realms of higher consciousness and peace. This shloka provides a standard for spiritual receptivity. It encourages the individual to approach the Gita with an open and respectful mind. It reinforces the idea that the Divine is eager to lift up anyone who shows even a spark of sincere interest. By promising the auspicious planets, Krishna is showing that the path of the Gita leads only to upward evolution, never to degradation. Thus, the Gita teaches that the vibrations of Truth have an inherent power to cleanse the soul. Therefore, simply being in the presence of the Gita's words with a faithful heart is enough to start the journey toward liberation. This verse acts as a bridge for those who feel they lack the intellectual capacity for deep study, ensuring that no one is left behind in the march toward the Absolute. In summary, the Lord rewards the simple act of faithful listening with the same destination as that of the pious and the pure.
