॥ Chapter 14, Shloka 15 ॥

रजसि प्रलयं गत्वा कर्मसङ्गिषु जायते।
तथा प्रलीनस्तमसि मूढयोनिषु जायते।। १४.१५ ।।

Summary Translation:

When one dies in the mode of passion, he takes birth among those engaged in fruitive activities; and when he dies in the mode of ignorance, he takes birth in the animal kingdom.

Detailed Analysis:

In this verse, Lord Krishna explains the Consequences of dying in the modes of Rajas and Tamas. He states that one who meets death during the prevalence of Rajas is जायते (born) among karma-sangisu—those Attached to action. Conversely, one who dies in the state of Tamas is जायते (born) in mudha-yonisu— Wombs of the deluded or the animal species. This analysis presents the Gravity of our internal states. If one dies in Rajas, they are Re-cycled back into the human world of ambition, struggle, and Anxiety. They must continue the Grind of Karma. This is not a Promotion but a Sidestep. The state of Tamas is even more Severe. Dying in a Fog of ignorance leads to mudha-yonisu, which religious interpretations define as Birth in lower forms of life—animals, birds, or insects—where the Facility for spiritual reasoning is absent. In a religious sense, this shloka provides a Warning against Stagnation and Regression. It teaches that the Trajectory of the soul is Self-determined. The Significance of karma-sangisu is that the soul is Bound to its own Desires for material achievement. The detailed interpretation emphasizes that mudha-yonisu (deluded wombs) are Pits where the light of the Father is Hidden by the Thickness of matter. For a devotee, this is a Call to Urgency. One cannot afford to be Lazy (Tamas) or Agitated (Rajas) at the end of life. Krishna is Instructing Arjuna that his Attachment to the Results of the war could Trap him in the cycle of Rajasic rebirth. This shloka thus serves as a Map of the Downward Spiral, showing that Negligence in this life leads to Suffering in the next. It prepares the student to understand the Fruits of each Guna's actions, as described in the next verse.
