Summary Translation:
The real form of this tree cannot be perceived in this world. No one can understand where it ends, where it begins, or where its foundation is. But with determination one must cut down this strongly rooted tree with the weapon of detachment. Thereafter, one must seek that place from which, having gone, one never returns, and there surrender to that Supreme Personality of Godhead from whom everything began and from whom everything has extended since time immemorial.
In these two critical verses, Lord Krishna reveals the Solution to the Problem of material existence. He begins by stating that the rupam (true form) of this tree is not Perceivable in this world; it has na anto (no end), na adih (no beginning), and na sampratistha (no stable foundation). This analysis shows that the Soul is lost in a Maze of beginningless time and space. The Prescription is to cut down this su-virudha-mulam (strongly rooted) Ashvattha tree with the drdhena asanga-shastrena (the firm weapon of detachment). This is a Command for Disidentification. Once the tree is Felled, one must then Seek (parimargitavyam) that padam (state/place) from which na nivartanti bhuyah—there is no Return to the cycle of birth. Krishna provides the Mantra for this journey: I take Shelter in that Adyam Purusham (Original Person) from whom this purani pravrttih (ancient flow of activity) has Emanated. In a religious sense, these shlokas provide the Method for Moksha. They teach that Liberation is not a Modification of the world but a Severance from it. The Weapon of Detachment is the Tool that Disconnects the soul's Interest from the Gunas. For a devotee, this is a Call to Surrender (prapatti). Krishna is Instructing Arjuna that the only way to Win the battle of life is to Abandon the tree of material desires and Merge his will with the Supreme Person.
