Summary Translation:
The branches of this tree extend downward and upward, nourished by the three modes of material nature. The twigs are the objects of the senses. This tree also has roots going down, and these are bound to the fruitive actions of human society.
In this verse, Lord Krishna expands on the Anatomy of the material tree. He explains that its shakhah (branches) extend both adhah (downwards) and urdhvam (upwards). These branches are guna-pravrddha—nourished and Enlarged by the three Gunas (Sattva, Rajas, Tamas). The visaya-pravalah (sense objects) are the Twigs or buds of these branches. The analysis reveals that the soul's Experiences in the material world are Dependent on how the Gunas Interact with the sense objects. Krishna also mentions adhah cha mulani—secondary roots that extend downwards, Binding the soul through karma-anubandhini (the bondage of action) in the manushya-loke (the world of humans). This Complexity explains how Desire creates Karma, which then Reinforces the soul's attachment to the tree. In a religious sense, this shloka provides a Diagnosis of the Human Condition. It shows that we are Caught in a web of our own Actions. The secondary roots represent the Samskaras (latent impressions) that drive us to Re-enter the world of birth and death. For a devotee, this is a Warning about the Strength of material bondage. Krishna is Instructing Arjuna that the tree is not just a Concept but a Reality that must be Confronted. This shloka thus serves as a Description of the Mechanics of entanglement, identifying the Role of the Gunas and Karma in Sustaining the soul's presence in the material universe.
