Chapter 16, Shloka 17

आत्मसम्भाविताः स्तब्धा धनमानमदान्विताः।
यजन्ते नामयज्ञैस्ते दम्भेनाविधिपूर्वकम्।। १६.१७ ।।

Summary Translation:

Self-complacent and always impudent, deluded by wealth and false prestige, they sometimes proudly perform sacrifices in name only, without following any rules or regulations.

Detailed Analysis:

In this verse, Lord Krishna exposes the Hypocrisy of demonic religious practice. He describes such people as Atma-sambhavitah—those who are self-important and Conceited. They are Stabdhah, meaning they are Stubborn and impudent toward Authority. Driven by Dhana-mana-madanvitah (the pride of wealth and prestige), their Ego becomes their Idol. The analysis reveals that even when they perform Yajante (sacrifices), they do so as Nama-yajna—sacrifices in name only. This Ritualism is performed Dambhena (hypocritically) and Avidhi-purvakam (without following rules). For a Hindu, a sacrifice without Adherence to the scriptures is a Farce. Krishna is Identifying that the demonic perform Deeds merely for social Status. Their Motivation is not Love for God, but Exhibitionism. The Significance of this shloka is that it shows how Pride ruins Spirituality. Krishna’s Diagnosis proves that Wealth combined with Arrogance leads to Disobedience. They Reject the Standards of the Vedas. This Defiance ensures that their Worship remains Fruitless. The Lesson here is that Humility is Mandatory for true spiritual progress. Krishna Guides us to avoid the Trap of Pretense. This verse serves as a Warning that Knowledge without Sincerity is Void. It underscores the Necessity of following Dharma with Submission. Ultimately, Devotion must be Pure to reach the Goal of Krishna consciousness.
